I ask how deep
the falling snow is.

Mt. Arashiyama carries a speck of cloud under the June sky.
は 春の海ひねもすのたりのたりかな

Spring ocean
swaying gently
all day long.
に 日本(にっぽん)がここに集まる初詣(はつもうで)

All Japan
gathers here
for New Year's Day worship.

Sound of falls
make the petals of yellowrose
dance down one by one .

facing new bamboos,
how much I miss my late mother .

sprouting tree buds.
わ わが事(こと)とどじょうの逃げし根(ね)芹(ぜり)かな

I didn't chase you,
you thought I did,
the mudfish hides beyond the parsley.

Dew descending
night falling
the letters "Good Evening" clear on the lantern.

With each shower,
on heads of green onions,
it grows colder.

The sun is in the west
the moon is in the east
kanola blossoms in the middle.

The stars shine bright
even in the daytime
here where mushrooms sprout.
む 麦刈りて近(おう)江(み)の湖(うみ)の碧(あお)さかな

After harvesting the wheat

I sing a lullaby
for the baby on my back.

on the arrow wheel,
carp streamers lively.
ま 曼珠沙(まんじゅしゃ)華(げ)抱(だ)くほどとれど母恋し

the more you fill my arms,
the more I miss my mom.

setting sunlight shines
into the pine cove.
